red footprints

in 2007, the door swung wide
for us to first step into Uganda
onto Africa's red dirt, warned
how profoundly we would be
changed, and we were

it took seven years to return
not to Uganda, but Zambia
and in Malawi, our hearts
found home

our future, never certain
is solid as air, God's plans
always a mystery, our feet
will soon leave the continent
but long the dust will linger
in our hearts

Many plans are in a man’s mind,
but it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand.

fingers wide

the sorting, sifting
shifting perspective continues
and in the jumble, the crumbled
dreams, the ragged edges
tiny tasty bits, too precious
to discard
where then, to hold
these treasures
found?
what release will be
required next?
my hands willed open
fingers spread wide
in a stubborn "yes"

seeking liquescence

I know not why fingers
cling to what was never
meant for holding

frozen I pray
for fluidity, release
into liquescence

we are on the move
chasing vision
pliable in obedience

may God form, reform
these lives not ours
but His

in flux, spinning
my heart stills
in His hand

So I went to the potter’s house,
and sure enough, the potter was there, working away at his wheel.
Whenever the pot the potter was working on turned out badly,
as sometimes happens when you are working with clay,
the potter would simply start over and use the same clay to make another pot

opening

hearts are cracking
opening fresh, wild
ready to draw in more
tears and smiles
mingle, how privileged
are we to watch
as God moves nations

Halfway into the Global Orientation Conference
we are surrounded by those much younger than us
the other night we sang Hosanna
I see a generation
rising up to take their place
with selfless faith
and I journalled:

Last night I sensed that You plan to use us as examples for the generation following us. How best can we do that Lord?

obedience and surrender
they will see your willing spirit
when you die to self with joy
they will see how you love
when you allow yourself
to be moved by the wind of My Spirit
they will learn how to dance with Me
step by step, breath by breath

obedience?

For the first dive into her series Living the Questions/Living into the Answers Diana talks about obedience.  What a word.

My Who Is HisFireFly page boldly states:
I desire to walk in radical obedience to His voice
but what does that really mean to me?

I have followed rigorous Bible reading plans
learned much, but often felt lost at sea
I sensed Him telling me not bite off more
than I could chew, to read less, meditate more
allow Him, not a schedule to lead me

I attempted to be faithful in prayer
yet never fit the pattern
of warriors and intercessors
who tried to school me
no list of requests for me
instead I simply seek His presence
abide, wait, respond
He said
when you're breathing you're praying
so I relax into that

a few years ago
I sensed Him repeating to my spirit
On assignment.  My work.  Stay close and I will lead you
This is how I choose to live each moment.
Obedience. Radical and real.
This is how I will walk into whatever He future He has planned.
His will.  His way.  Any plan I could imagine or create cannot compare.

let it be unto me

Bonnie asked us to think
about which character in the Christmas story
speaks to us most deeply
and I think of Mary

but we are not yet in Bethlehem
nor are we on the way
my spirit trembles, resonates
with the pre-Christmas story

Mary was busy with the details of life
yes, she loved her God
but she also loved her betrothed
promises, dreams and plans
swirled through her thoughts
day after ordinary day

promises, dreams and plans
swirl through my thoughts
day after ordinary day

but God interrupts
with plans of His own
sending word
before shuffling the deck

The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
And now, you will conceive in your womb
and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.
He will be great,
and will be called the Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give to him
the throne of his ancestor David.
He will reign over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be, since I am a virgin?”
The angel said to her,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you;
therefore the child to be born will be holy;
he will be called Son of God.

perhaps Mary could have said no
perhaps I can say no
when what He asks doesn't seem to suit my desires
but I hear the quiet voice as the Holy Spirit sings
reminding me of my quest
a life laid down, surrendered
to reply, boldly as Mary did

Behold, I am the handmaiden of the Lord;
let it be done to me according to what you have said.

I have tasted the blessings of obedience
and I hunger for more of the same
let it be unto me
let it be unto me
let it be unto me
as He wills

Surrender like Esther

from the work of Lilian Broca
Esther was asked to live dangerously for the sake of her people.  Her very life was on the line if she went to speak to the King without being summoned.  She wanted to choose a simpler and safer way… but her uncle Mordechai reminded her:

For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance shall arise for the Jews from elsewhere, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows but that you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this and for this very occasion? Esther 4:14 Amplified

Esther chose the way of the Lord, the way of surrender. She didn't know what the outcome would be.  She didn't know the mind of the King.  But she did know her God. She chose to trust Him even when her rational mind could only see danger. She sent this message back to Mordechai:

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast for me; and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. I also and my maids will fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.  Esther 4:16 Amplfied

Esther did not perish and in her choice to surrender her own safety her people were saved.  God rewarded her obedience.

I’m reminded of a favourite song, People on their Knees by Tracy Rahn:

No more wasting time
The days are nearly over
The Groom is quickly coming
He greets us with a kiss
And proclaims you have been chosen
For such a time as this
I chose to follow You
Forsaking all I know
I’m taking up my cross
And if I die, I die
To find my life in You
O Lord this is my cry

Will you join me in prayer? A simple, powerful and scary prayer? Tell Him with a sincere heart:

Lord, to find my life in You, I will do whatever You ask.

Sharing stories of faith

My sweet southern friend Leah Adams felt God urging to gather and share stories of faith.

I was happy to chip in my few mites --
Jesus met me and changed a woman who had no heart at all into the tenderhearted woman who writes these words now, indeed replacing a heart of stone with a heart of flesh.
One evening I sat at the computer, in my Chicago suburban home. An internet message came through from a stranger, like many  I’d regularly receive, asking simple questions. The info he provided included the fact that he was in a committed marriage, satisfied with his life, and a Christian. We began chatting online. He warned me that somewhere along the way he’d try to save my soul. I took it as both a joke, and a challenge.
Come on over to The Point to read the rest of the story...

Holy week rambling

This is called Holy Week
the time between Palm and Easter Sundays
a time of passion
wonder
awe

This is a week of sudden outbursts
gratitude, praise
tears

This is a week of choosing
to believe
what is impossible
to believe

breath stopping sacrifice
reckless obedience
for you
for me
for all

I am uncertain
have I learned to receive
what I did not deserve
unmerited grace
mad rush of love
have I learned to give
in the same measure

poor in spirit
we are all
the least of these

Go forth with courage

I was surprised today to find many bloggers writing about courage.  Each new post confirmed the words Jesus shared with me this morning in my journalling time:

Yes, I Am leading you
moment by moment
word by word
I choose your conversations
and you, little one, have responded in obedience
even when you did not understand what I was asking

I desire to see you continue
to use that which I give you to encourage others
My words are powerful
when mixed with your very human touch

This is why I ask you to remain close, attentive
listen for what I would have you say
then go forth with courage

I simply follow

Winding hills and flat stretches
without a curve or bump to help mark the time
this path He sets before me
rarely can I see past the next step
this too is by His design
for would I go if I knew what waits for me?
would Paul have risen from that Damascus road
had he understood the trials that would come
walking in obedience to the one he came to know as Lord?

Each day is filled with the expectation of surprise
and yes, sometimes my heart grows weary, worried
when I forget to trust the path’s Creator.

My hand is always within your reach - He whispers
you do not ever need walk alone
and even when you do not feel it
I Am leading you

How then could I ever dream of choosing another road?

Unfold in faith

The tender flowers of Jacob's ladders pop out their heads
trusting no more snow will scatter cold upon them

leaves expose their stripes of greens
as hostas unfold
hoping the time for frost has passed

and I too, in like manner
extend tendrils of faith
in obedience to His call for transparency

so while it is not easy or comfortable
to come before you naked
it is what He asks today

I can use both your abilities and lack of ability, your strengths and weaknesses

This is why I ask you to be "real", to not pretend when life is hard
to share your doubts, to share your fears, to share your faith even when it wavers

It is that same honesty and willingness to strip down exposing vulnerability that
encourages others

Don't be afraid of falling for it is I Who catches you

The flowers now are trusting in the warmth of Spring
while I must trust in the One Who holds Spring in His hand

Rust in the cracks

Rust fills in the cracks
the day seems too long and yet gone in an instant
my heart feels hard
but fragile
brittle enough to open far too easily
leaking passion

What do I do with a wheel fixed in place?

There is something calling to me
I can't sense the direction
the wind swirls and jumbles
but I know the Source
I have promised to listen
to follow
to obey

No I am not good at waiting
as my old wood splinters
wobbles and creaks
trying to find beauty there
as rust fills in the cracks

Anything by Jennie Allen

I first tasted the work of Jennie Allen when I began leading a small group through her Stuck bible study.  I was impressed not only with the depth but also with her humility and "realness".  From the very first pages of Anything The Prayer That Unlocked My God and My Soul I could recognize that very same voice.

The teaser on the back cover echoed the cry of my own heart:
Caught in this familiar haze of worldly happiness and empty pursuits, Jennie Allen and her husband Zac prayed a courageous prayer of abandonment that took them on an adventure God had written for them.
"God, we will do anything. Anything,"
Jennie walks us through the many ways God has been answering their prayer and the prayers of those around them who have chosen to surrender.

The following passage resonated loudly in my own spirit:
What does God want most?
I've always known the answer, though I've never known what the answer meant.  I certainly never knew what the answer meant for my life.
God is most after his glory.
If, like me, your desire is for more of what God wants for your life, this book will be a helpful guide along a road that is not easy or simple but the only truly rewarding journey there is.

Too many times we believe that this life is all about our own happiness, comfort and sastisfaction.  Jennie speaks profound truth that is rarely shared:
To accept that life is supposed to be hard is the beginning of joy.
If you're looking for the joy of knowing what its like to be fully open and surrendered to the Lord, this is one book you will not want to miss.

The opinions I have shared are my own.

Choosing to obey

Ready to burst and bloom, yet waiting
For a long time now my bio has described me as:
a sold out disciple of Jesus Christ learning more each day what it means to abide in Him; desiring to walk in radical obedience to His voice and praying that my life brings glory to The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit
I choose to obey because I have tasted the sweetness of the blessings that accompany bowing to His direction, His will, His ways.  With each new act of surrender, there is a breaking, a shifting and a settling.  The more I give up of myself, the deeper the peace that descends and envelopes me.

As hard as it is sometimes to go when He says "go" speak when He says "speak" or jump if He says "jump" it is far more difficult for me to be still.

Yet this is indeed where I now find myself, quiet, listening and awaiting His command.

So when my words are few, I pray you will understand.  I have books reviews to post shortly and then will write whatever He inspires.

What about you?  Is it easier for you to move or remain still?

He knew where home was...

Some of you know the story of my first face-to-face encounter with my beloved.  I have posted the tale in parts, but it is a story I love repeating. so here we go again...

My bags were packed; plans were made for my mother to drive me to the airport. It was the night before my flight, and there was nothing left to do but talk with Rick on the phone and sleep. I was excited, but also nervous and listening yet again to fear and doubt, words that were not coming from the mouth of God.

“What if you decide I'm too ugly” I asked “I'm scared. I'm sure of God but not sure of me.”

“Why don't you take a tranquilizer or sleeping pill if you have one” he said. “You need to get some rest tonight and not worry so. Unless you develop Elephant Man disease overnight, there is nothing to worry about.”

Somehow his words and the time we spent in prayer together soothed me and I was able to get a little bit of sleep. I rose ready to face whatever the Lord was about to do.

When my mother was dropping me off at the airport, she asked “Are you going to come back married?”

“Maybe so” I answered, not wanting to admit that they had already planned for that.

“Will you call when you get there, to let us know you're safe?”

“Of course I will Mom, and don't worry.” A quick hug and kiss goodbye and I walked into the airport terminal and a new beginning.

Once the plane had reached cruising altitude I did what came naturally. I pulled out my journal and began to write:
It is so bright up here in God's light. Surrounded by the light this morning on the first part of journey. But.. I have had His light around me for weeks now. I am so sure of Him, in a way I had not previously felt.
Oh my precious Father, what new words can I find to praise You? How to best let Your name be glorified? Let Your light shine through me, Lord, for every living soul to see Your reflection in me.

I ask for guidance this morning Father, trusting that You will lead me where You want me, but not quite trusting myself. Let me not chase after my own desires, but continue to seek what You desire of me.
The time spent in prayer and reflection soothed my spirit. Stashing the journal back in my carry on, I was ready for the plane to land and to walk into the arms of the man who waited for me.

I stood in the immigration services line with my passport, thinking it odd that Canada was a foreign country. When I was called to the desk, the officer asked me “What is the purpose of your visit, business or pleasure?”

“Pleasure. Definitely pleasure” I replied, while thinking “and about my Father's business”

The officer stamped my passport and I was free to retrieve my bags when they came around on the carousel. The two suitcases were bulky and hard to handle and I felt foolish for packing so much.

One more line to wait in for the customs agent, who simply took my declaration card and said “Welcome to Canada” and I walked through the doors to find Rick, wearing the hat he said he would wear so I would recognize him, just in case he looked different than his picture.

After weeks of imagining what it would feel like, I was held tight in his embrace. Then he whispered very clearly in my ear “a hundred and ten percent, baby.”

I remembered his words to his pastor when he had asked Rick how he could be so sure I was the right woman for him. “I'm 99 percent sure now. When I meet her at the airport I'll be a hundred percent sure.”

“Hundred and ten, eh?” I laughed, feeling every bit of apprehension drain from my being. I knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be, at last.

It was a 3-1/2 hour ride from Winnipeg to Rick’s home town. We talked and laughed as if we had known each other all our lives and were continuing a conversation where we had left off. There was a comfort and familiarity between us that surprised us both.

Rick told me a story about his coworker trying to convince him that I was probably some weirdo who had undergone a sex change. While he was laughing, I turned to him, with quite suddenly a very serious look on my face.

“Oh rats! Now you know! I was hoping to keep it a secret.” I said sternly, but I couldn't maintain the serious expression and started to giggle, then chuckle, then laugh heartily.

“I'll have to check it out for myself then” Rick snickered.

“Not until we're married” I warned, wagging my finger at him “And by then it will be too late.”

The laughter felt wonderful, from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet. Joy filled the car. With the joy came the peace that only God could provide.

Every time Rick had to pause at a stop light he would lean over to kiss me. There was a new kind of thrill that moved through my blood, different than any man had caused before. If someone had asked me to describe it, I would not have had words. I simply knew that this was stronger, deeper, more right than any touch from my past.

Once we got away from the city, the highway narrowed to one lane each direction. There was very little traffic. It was unusually warm for so early in May as if God had shifted weather patterns to make for an enjoyable day of traveling. Rick named off the towns as we moved through them, and I watched the unfamiliar landscape passing outside the open window.

There was mile upon mile upon endless mile of open fields. Farmers, using various kinds of large equipment that I did not yet know the names of, were busy preparing the ground for the coming season of planting. Barns, and old farm houses and grain storage bins reached out into the fields.

“There's nothing but land” I exclaimed. “Land extending out forever no matter where I look. It's unbelievable.”

"Yep” Rick nodded, smiling. “I'd expect that reaction from a city girl.”

There was space, blue sky, bright sun and fresh air. I inhaled deeply and let everything inside myself settle. “I'm here” I thought silently “here where you've sent me Lord.”

We were getting closer to his home town, approaching a lake that he wanted me to see. Rick asked if it would make me nervous if he pulled off onto a side road.

"Well, if you're going to kill me now, have at it” I laughed. “I've trusted you and come this far, why stop now.”

He slowed and pulled the car to a stop, parking near the driveway of a beautiful home.

“If we go to the beach from here we don't have to pay to get in and park” he said, taking hold of my hand, and we started walking.

It felt good to be out of the car and stretch. I noticed that we walked in the same rhythm, legs moving in unison. We were walking on a well trodden path through bushes and trees. Rick stopped frequently to pull me into his embrace and kiss me with all the passion that had been building up over the past weeks.

"Wow! I guess I hadn't needed to worry about chemistry” I said, my knees weakening at his touch.

When we emerged from the path onto the beach I erupted with delight.

“Did I ever tell you how much I've always loved the water?”

“I don't believe you did” Rick replied, shaking his head. “There's lots of things we have to learn about each other, and we'll have lots of time to learn them.”

The Emancipation of Robert Sadler, Chapian & Sadler

I was intrigued when I read the following description of The Emancipation of Robert Sadler The Powerful True Story of a Twentieth-Century Plantation Slave by Marie Chapian and Robert Sadler.
Over fifty years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Robert Sadler was sold into slavery at the age of five--by his own father. Originally published in 1975, this is the no-holds-barred tale of those dark days, his quest for freedom, and the determination to serve others borne out of his experience. You won't forget this poignant true story of good triumphing over evil, of God's grace, and of an extraordinary life of ministry.
I knew this would not be an easy read.  My heart was torn as I read these powerful words about man's inhumanity to his fellow man writen from a very personal perspective.  I admit to having a bit of trouble reading the conversations written in the regional dialect, but I am glad that I pressed through.

This story is a testimony to God's faithfulness to save and protect those who choose to surrender their lives into His hands.

My favourite tales were those of Sadler's ministry adventures, how God blessed his obedience by showing Him wonderous example of His power in miracles of healings and salvation.  We could all learn a lesson here about both listening and really hearing God's voice.

Marie Chapian is a Christian counselor and author or coauthor of more than thirty books, including the bestsellers Telling Yourself the Truth and Free to Be Thin. She founded Marie Chapian Ministries in 1982 to teach and equip the body of Christ. She lives in Southern California.

Robert Sadler (1911–1986) was born near Anderson, South Carolina, in 1911. He was sold into slavery at the age of five and escaped at fourteen. Eventually he moved to Ohio but traveled extensively sharing the gospel and ministering to others at every opportunity.

Obedience's reward

In the middle of work at the computer
I felt a nudge to start dinner heating
It seemed a bit early, but I didn't argue

This is the sight that met my eyes
as I looked out the kitchen window
Day's end streaking the sky

What else might we be missing
in our slowness to hear
reluctance to listen?

This evening's lesson learned -
He always rewards obedience

But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams. 1 Samuel 15:22 NLT

Did Mary know? Do I?

Did Mary know
when the angel came
what her surrender
would accomplish?

Then Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaiden of the Lord; let it be done to me according to what you have said. And the angel left her.  Luke 1:38 Amplified

Questions will remain unasked,
unanswered
not every stop will be marked
neatly on a map
I may not know the why
but must believe that the Who
can sort out the how
and my part
the simplest and most difficult
is to say "yes"

because nothing I can imagine
can compare
and all that is good, in me
is His

according to His Word
according to His will
let it be done to me
let it be done through me

Helping a miracle

In his new book What's the Best That Could Happen,  Jason Stasyszen shares insights and encouragement in the same way he shares on his blog Connecting to Impact.

I have always been challenged and spurred on by Jason's words, for example, in Chapter 15 - A Life of Obedience and Trust he writes:

There is a blessing in obedience that cannot be understated. It's a blessing of heart, mind, soul, and spirit. It proves we are who we say we are. If we confess to be followers of Jesus, obedience proves we follow Jesus. If there's not obedience to what He taught (and how He leads) then we aren't living in truth.
This strikes deep into my spirit, for my greatest desire is indeed to walk in radical obedience.  It is in fact obedience to the Lord's voice that calls me to share this book and help both a friend and a child.

If you've never read Jason's blog, this book is  a great way to catch up.

For regular followers, you likely already know that Jason and his family are believing a miracle will unfold around them as they raise funds to go to Japan to bring home the adopted son they have dreamed of for years.

Your purchase of this wonderful E-Book will help support their cause.  Find out more about the book and how you can help by clicking HERE.  If you don't want to purchase the book you can donate directly, and if you can't donate, you can pray.  Follow the journey at Jason's blog Connecting to Impact.
