The Devil Walks in Mattingly by Billy Coffey

Giveaway winner is named at the end of this review.

I became a fan of Billy Coffey's writing years ago, devouring his regular blog posts before he published his first book.

Then came Snow Day, Paper Angels and When Mockingbirds Sing.  I have savoured each novel, always looking forward to the next.

The Devil Walks in Mattingly is a deeper, darker tale, previewed on the back cover with the following words:
For the three people tortured by their secret complicity in a young man's untimely death, redemption is what they most long for . . . and the last thing they expect to receive.
As I writer, I read not only for content, but for the taste and feel of the words themselves. I was not disappointed, like his other works, from beginning to end, Billy's prose remains stunningly lyrical.
I come to this place of darkness because it is where the light of heaven once touched. I come here for the ones who were saved on a night long ago and for the ones lost.
I come because heaven is not without the past.
These are characters that dug their way into my heart, both heroes and antiheroes.  My concern for each kept me turning page after page, hungry to discover what would happen next.  I was moved in the darkness to each shining patch of light.

My only complaint is that this novel deprived me of sleep and distracted me from my own work.  Yes, it IS that good.

You owe it to yourself to read The Devil Walks in Mattingly as well as Billy's older books, and make sure to catch up with him on his blog What I Learned Today where he shares day to day truths with home town warmth and skill.

Thomas Nelson Publishers has graciously provided a copy of The Devil Walks in Mattingly for me to give away to one lucky reader.  Selected by random draw is Pastor Joel!  I do believe, however, that anyone who takes the time to read Billy's work will find themselves a winner.

I was blessed to receive a copy of this novel to review.  The opinions I have shared, as always, are my own.

Coffee with Billy Coffey and a Giveaway

For the three people
tortured by their secret complicity
in a young man's untimely death,
redemption is what they most long for . . .
and the last thing they expect to receive.

so begins the description on the back cover of Billy Coffey's latest novel The Devil Walks in Mattingly.

Billy has once again graced me with the opportunity to ask him a few questions about this new story and his work in general.  Pour yourself a cup of coffee or your favourite beverage and sit a spell with us. Don't leave too quickly, there's a giveaway brewing at the end of our chat.

Billy, I appreciate that you're willing to take a few minutes to once again talk about your work as your latest book launches.  I think I'll mix it up today, asking some deep and some more trivial questions.

Do you have more than one novel in progress at the same time, one getting captured on paper and others percolating in the background?
I do. I’m always looking for a story. I’m neurotic enough that I’m afraid those ideas will dry up sooner or later, so I like to keep a thick stack of them. I try to plan Novel B while I’m writing Novel A. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work out the way I’d like it to.
Do you know as you begin a new work that you will need more than one novel to tell the tale?
I think there are two things going on with all of my books. There’s that single story, and then there is some mysterious overall arc that’s going on in this little Virginia town where all of these stories take place. I have no idea what that overall story is yet, but I’m hoping I will eventually.
The Devil Walks in Mattingly feels like your deepest and darkest book to date.  Did this story haunt you more as you brought it to life?
There were aspects of it that got into my head a little. Taylor’s character certainly did. Not so much because he did such awful things (which is certainly true), but that he did those awful things because of the deep pain inside him. I wanted him to be truly frightening at the beginning of the book, and truly pitied at the end.
What do you have sitting on your desk while you write besides coffee?
So much stuff. Books, papers, pictures. I have an old tomahawk head that was found in a cornfield near my house. A small bust of Leonardo da Vinci. And plenty of pens.
What tools do you use, paper and pen, keyboard or both?
It’s always paper and pen at first. I can write faster with a keyboard, but faster isn't always better. I have a Waterman fountain pen that I've used for a long while now. It’s my favorite thing. I’ll usually write a chapter longhand, type it into my computer, print it out, and then go line by line with a pen again.
The people of Mattingly all seemed quick to accept blame.  Do you agree that it is harder to accept credit for positive things?
It’s certainly true for me. There’s a fine line between carrying a sense of responsibility and being burdened by a sense of blame. There are people who believe themselves perfect and people who believe themselves horrible, and there’s little middle ground. Trying to find that balance that says yes, we’re flawed, and yes, we’re wonderfully made, can be tough. But it’s necessary.
Can we expect to read more about Jake, Kate and Zach in future novels?
The Barnett family is slowly becoming central to a lot of these stories, especially Jake. As sheriff, he’s more often than not the man standing between the town and all this darkness. You’ll see all three of them in the next novel, especially Zach. You’ll see Allie Granderson from When Mockingbirds Sing in that one, too. It’s called In the Heart of the Dark Wood, and it’ll be out this November.
Thanks for sharing your visions with us in such wondrous ways Billy. You leave us richer for the reading.

Thomas Nelson Publishers has been kind enough to make a copy of The Devil Walks in Mattingly available for me to give away to one lucky reader.  All you need to do is:

When Mockingbirds Sing by Billy Coffey

Thomas Nelson, the publishers of Billy Coffey's latest novel When Mockingbirds Sing begin their description of the story with this line:
What marks the boundary between a miracle from God and the imagination of a child?
In this new novel, Billy Coffey introduces us to a world of faith, doubt and God's mysterious ways, seen through the eyes of a lonely child.  Leah believes in "the maybe" and has to face the sad truth that many people around do not.  When she begins painting prophetic pictures the town begins to swirl.

As he weaves threads of lives together into a stunning whole, Billy holds up a mirror that reflects not only our faces but our hearts.  I'd like to think that my faith is strong, but like the people of Mattingly, I admit that I too can waver when I see things I don't quite understand.

I will not share more because I fear spoiling the story, but I encourage you to take a journey to Mattingly, to meet all the people dwelling there, including The Rainbow Man.  If you are anything like me, you will smile, you will weep, spend some time on your knees and then you'll hunger for more.

I was given a complimentary copy of this novel.  The opinions I have expressed are my own.

and now... the winner of their own copy of When Mockingbirds Sing is --

Holly Grantham who wrote:
What gives me courage is hearing other folks' stories. To know that someone else in the big wide world has braved something hard and challenging and lived to tell about it--well, it infuses me with strength I didn't have before. Vulnerability begets vulnerability and vulnerability is fueled by courage.
Contact me with your shipping address Holly and we'll have the book on its way to you!

Billy Coffey on writing and a giveaway!!!

I have been moved, inspired and encouraged by the words of Billy Coffey since I first started reading his blog years ago.  He is a writer's writer and a down to earth, God fearing, sit awhile on the front porch Virginia man.  With his latest novel When Mockingbirds Sing releasing next week, Billy was gracious enough to take time to answer a few questions for us.

Billy, with three books published and another on the way, I believe you’re qualified to speak a bit about the art and craft of fiction writing.

Do you feel like you design your characters or do they develop a life of their own as you begin to put words to paper?
I usually begin with a name, a problem, and how that problem gets solved. Novels aren’t about events as much as they’re about people and how they change between the first chapter and the last. Those three things are all I allow myself to think of at the beginning. After that, they sort of come alive on their own. By and large, though, I think every character in every story is in some ways a reflection of the writer. At least, that’s true for me.
Do the paths your stories wind down ever take you by surprise?
Occasionally, yes. I've always been better at characters than plot, so I have to approach plotting carefully. It’s a balancing act. If you sit down and try to outline every single moment of your story, there’s a good chance it will grow stale. I have in mind where I want to start, where things need to be at the middle, and a rough idea of how it all ends. I let the rest take me by surprise.
How much have your characters taught you, or changed the way you look at this life?
I think they've taught me much more about myself. All the characters in When Mockingbirds Sing are segments of my own personality—Leah’s shyness, Allie’s belief in life’s magic, Reverend Goggins’s sense of entitlement. They’re all me. Seeing me laid out on the page wasn’t very comfortable, but it made me see my own strengths and weaknesses.
I know we have talked about how much courage it takes to pour your self into words.  Where do you turn when that courage begins to fade?  How do you keep yourself going?
To me, writing is a huge blessing. It’s also a huge responsibility. Readers don’t owe writers anything, and to pretend otherwise is only to court disaster. But writers owe readers plenty, and chief among that is honesty. You have to give the very best of yourself to the page, even when it hurts. Especially when it hurts. That responsibility is what I most often turn to when the courage begins to fade.
Any other words of wisdom or encouragement for those of us still working on our first novels?
Write every day. For every hour you spend on social media, spend three on your work.
Read every day. Not just the genre you’re writing for, either. Read anything. Everything. The broader your knowledge, the better you’re writing will be.
Kill your darlings.
Polish, submit, wait. And when those rejections come (they will, and often), always try one more time. I cannot stress that rule enough. Always, always. Just once more.
I hope this peaks your interest in Billy's work.  If you haven't already, you really should read Snow Day, Paper Angels and next week his latest becomes available When Mockingbirds Sing.  Here's a little peek into this new novel:

The Searchers by Joseph Loconte

I have often wondered what it would have been like to be one of the fellows walking along a road listening to the words of the One walking beside me not yet recognizing Who He Was.  I can't imagine not being able to see Him clearly.

In The Searchers A Quest for Faith in the Valley of Doubt by Joseph Loconte I was given the opportunity to see how at one time or another we all walk the Emmaus road.  As the back cover promises:
Drawing from literature, film, philosophy, history, and politics, Loconte shows how this biblical drama is an integral part of our own story.
As I read through these pages I become more and more convinced that nothing of any importance makes sense to me without the interpretive assistance of the Holy Spirit. Through His eyes I can look upon the world of history and politics and see Jesus in every bit of it.  With my own eyes I simply see what the world sees.

I pray that as you read Loconte's words you allow the Spirit to whisper truth in your ears and that faith would rise clear and strong.

I Am Second by Bender and Sterrett

An empty white seat marks the front cover of I Am Second.  Real Stories. Changed Lives by Doug Bender and Dave Sterrett.  The back cover teases with the following words:
Famous or unfamiliar, these are the stories of real people who reached the end of their strength, the end of their control, and found the most surprising truths. It taught them not to rely on self or substance but to lean on the only completely reliable source of love, hope, and freedom: the God who created them. Shocking in their honesty, inspiring in their courage, these testimonies are critical reminders that no one is too far from God to find him.
Nothing points to the power of God's love like lives that have been touched and redeemed. That is what I found in the words and also in the spaces between the lines.  I was glad to get a taste in the printed pages of what promises to be engaging video taped interviews.  The book provides links to the video clips but with my slower than slow internet connection I am unable to enjoy them.

The words printed have the power to touch hearts but I believe that the words spoken may indeed be supercharged to move spirits.  I pray that many, many more are impacted by the website and all that it links and leads to.

Constantly Craving by Marilyn Meberg

I admit that I struggle with always wanting more, more love, more food, more God. The book Constantly Craving How to Make Sense of Always Wanting More by Marilyn Meberg sounded like it had been written just for me. The back cover promises:
Counselor and author Marilyn Meberg knows all about cravings. She also knows the One who knit us together, desires and all. With wit and compassion, Marilyn helps us understand our appetites, offers advice for managing them here on earth, and encourages us to eagerly await the day when we will find total satisfaction in heaven.
As Meberg worked through Scripture to show us how what we need is more of the Lord I found myself losing interest. It seemed that she repeated the same theme over and over again. This would have done well as a conference topic or a short essay, but there was not enough meat to truly flesh out an entire book.

I’m not sure what I was expecting, a bit more humor perhaps, certainly more words about the feeling of stark need. I believe there were many paths Meberg could have followed yet I felt as if we were stalled at a corner she didn't choose to turn.  I was in fact craving more than what was offered.

Love Does by Bob Goff

I first heard of Bob Goff through the words of Donald Miller and all at once thought, “What an extraordinary sounding man. I’d love to know more about him.” I was given the opportunity to do exactly that through Goff’s new book Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World.

The author’s website explains:
In this book of compelling stories coupled with eye-opening truths, author Bob Goff shows you a new way to live, a way that’s drenched with the whimsy of God’s love and the spontaneity of following where he leads when he says “Go!” In this book, you learn what it looks like to be secretly incredible and advance God’s kingdom everywhere you are and wherever you’re going.
My heart has been turned towards God’s Kingdom and ways of reflecting all glory onto Him, so the idea of “secretly incredible” resonated deep in my spirit. What we do isn’t for ourselves, or about ourselves, but for our King, and He can use whatever broken pieces we offer. As Goff writes:
A couple of other things happen when we accept Jesus’ invitation to participate with Him in life. Obstacles that seem insurmountable aren’t. Impediments that we believe disqualify us don’t. When we show up to participate with Jesus in the big life, we’re participating with the very being who made life in the first place. He gently asks us how we are and invites us to get better together with Him.
Sometime’s Goff’s tales made me chuckle. Sometimes they left me laughing loud and long. There were tales they prompted tears as well. More often than not they left a knowing deep within that there is so much more to life with our Lord than we imagine.

As a writer, I know how it feels to want another to read, enjoy and be moved by the words you have strung together. Yet I wouldn’t be surprised that if you told Bob Goff you hadn’t been able to finish reading his book because you were off on a new adventure, he wouldn’t mind at all. In fact, I think he’d be delighted.

Nearing Home by Billy Graham

I visited the medical clinic recently for a far too long postponed physical check-up.  I walked out with a long list of tests that needed to be done, mostly because of my "age".  Though far from elderly, the years are adding up, and when Billy Graham's Nearing Home was released I thought it a good idea to dive in.

The publisher's page promises:

In what may be his most powerful message of the last decade, Billy Graham speaks to all on this side of Heaven as he covers the importance of four key areas:

Building strong foundations and understanding the gift of years; Facing life’s transitions, including the passing of years, retirement, and when loved ones die; Making wise decisions; Understanding our glorious hope
As one would expect from such a hero of the faith, this book is laced with wisdom from God's Word. The same truths that have sustained him, Billy Graham passes on to us.  I found that I needed not question his advice because it came from God Himself.

Covering issues that many of us would rather not think about, Billy is not without a humorous side:
A headline on an Internet site read, "Death, the nation's #1 killer."  The point was obvious - death is inevitable!

No one can outrun death.  It will catch up to all of us eventually.  When I was interviews by Newsweek in 2006 and asked to give a statement about death, I commented that I had been taught all of my life how to die, but no one had ever taught me how to grow old.
With this book in my hands, I can not make that same statement, for I am being taught by Billy Graham how to live, how to grow old and how to finish the race well, things well worth the learning.

The Jesus Calling Devotional Bible

The promotional material for Sarah Young's book Jesus Calling says:
After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to listen to God with pen in hand, writing down whatever she believed He was saying to her.  It was awkward at first, but gradually her journaling changed from monologue to dialogue.  She knew her writings were not inspired as Scripture is, but journaling helped her grow closer to God .   Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her messages.  They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title Jesus Calling.
Now Thomas Nelson Publishers have released the Jesus Calling Devotional Bible and I have been blessed to receive a sample to explore and review.

This New King James edition includes beautifully highlighted verses throughout, showing where God has spoken to His people through His Word.

There are intimate prayers written from the viewpoint of average people struggling to make sense of the world and on the facing page devotionals from one of Young's books that could be Jesus Himself answering the prayers with words of His own.

There is a topical index and an index titled When Your Heart Long For Help that directs you to the prayers and stories of people dealing with the same issues.

All this, surrounded by the truth and beauty of God's Word in New King James translation.

This is a Bible one can turn to in sorrow or joy, to find answers, comfort and truth and an edition you will surely want to add to your own colleciton or bless someone else with as a gift.

Close Enough to Hear God Breathe by Greg Paul

The words written on the back cover of Close Enough to Hear God Breathe The Great Story of Divine Intimacy by Greg Paul could have come from my own heart:
There are a thousand voices telling me who I am or who I should be.

I want to hear what God has to say.  I want to know that He's really there.  I want to know that in the whole grand, tangled sweep of the human story my little story matters.  I need to hear His voice speaking to me, in my own ears...
In a journey that should be familiar, through Creation, The Fall, Redemption and finally Consummation, Paul shows us through scripture and stories how God longs to speak to us as much as we hunger to hear Him.  His voice rings loud through the lives of those Paul has met on the streets of Toronto; homeless, addicted, ensnared in the sex trade, but human all.  God loves and pursues and His light can be seen shining in their eyes to those willing to get close enough to look.

Through these pages I found myself both chuckling and wiping tears from my eyes.  There were moments I needed to stop reading, close my eyes and sit silently, waiting for God to speak to me, as Paul left me hungry for Him.

If you have ever felt that your story doesn't matter to God then you need to read this book!

Your 100 Day Prayer by John I. Snyder

There is nothing magical about praying for 100 days, but as author of Your 100 Day Prayer The Transforming Power of Actively Waiting on God John Snyder says:
This sustained, stubborn, never-give-up spirit of prayer is not so much to persuade God to give us what we want, but rather to transform us in the process.
I live in a world that teaches us to want quick results and instant answers, yet I find myself hearing, more and more often, the quiet voice I recognize as my Lord, asking me to “Be still.” He doesn’t want me to rush through the drive thru lane at a fast food place, but rather to sit down and enjoy a nutritious full course meal with Him.

This is not just 100 days of reading, although the scriptures and stories Snyder shares would stand alone as a fine book of devotions. This volume is a both a challenge and an opportunity to draw close to God in a deeper way.

Snyder asks you to choose a need and gives you space to express that need as you begin your journey. Then each day, he offers words, the Word, a suggestion for your daily prayer and space to make notes about progress in your 100 day prayer.

I am anxious to return to page 1 and begin, not simply reading, but praying and expecting God to change not just my circumstances but my heart.

Love & Respect For a Lifetime - Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

Have you ever wondered why you don't seem to be able to communicate with your spouse in a way they understand? In this gift book, Dr. Emerson Eggerichs explains that men and women are seeking to satisfy two different needs. He begins with the premise that "women absolutely need love and men absolutely need respect" and goes on to show us examples of how these needs are misunderstood. He then shows us clues to move toward living and loving in ways that better meet those absolute needs.

Though I know this is important information for any man or women to learn, I felt this book was a bit lightweight in its approach. There were many pages of pictures and other pages that were left mostly blank except for a single quote that repeated text from other parts of the book. That space could have been better used to provide more examples or delve deeper into this vital topic. I would, however, consider giving this book to new couples as an appetizer, a way to stimulate their appetite to learn more.

Andy Andrews' The Butterfly Effect

Do you walk through life at times feeling that nothing you do is important? When you look around does it seem that your life has no impact? Then The Butterfly Effect – How Your Life Matters, the new book releasing today by Andy Andrews is a must read.

He begins with Edward Lorenz’s hypothesis that the flapping wings of one butterfly begin motion that could eventually start a hurricane and moves on to share stories of seemingly small or insignificant acts that had profound life changing effects on the world.

I read through this short gift book quickly, but have spent much time pondering the simple truths revealed within its few words. This book will bring hope and encouragement to many. I could sense the voice of our loving God speaking through the pages, reminding us that He indeed created us with a plan and a purpose. My one complaint is that I wanted more. If Andy chooses to expand on this in a full length book I would surely be anxious to read it. I suggest that you keep an extra copy of The Butterfly Effect to pass on to friends and family. You might just start a chain reaction of life altering proportion.

Living with Confidence in a Chaotic World by Dr. David Jeremiah

Things can look pretty scary out there in the world when we look through our natural eyes. Terrorism, financial collapse, weather disasters and whispers of new world orders can leave us dizzy with doubts, fears and confusion.

As a follow up to his bestselling What In The World Is Going On, Dr. David Jeremiah gives us Living With Confidence In A Chaotic World What On Earth Should We Do Now?

Dr. Jeremiah takes us by our trembling hands and leads us through the truth of Who God Is and what His Word promises. He shows us how to be --

  • Centered in Christ

  • Committed to the Word

  • Compassionate toward others

  • Connected to the church

  • Consistent in our walk

  • Calm in our heart

  • Certain of Christ's return

  • Confident in our faith

I found that Dr. Jeremiah's words not only strengthened my faith in Jesus and God's sovereign power, but I feel better equipped to provide support, comfort and encouragement to others. I am convinced more than ever before that the answers we seek can be found in the manual God prepared for us, His living Word.

Dr. Jeremiah writes:

"The Word of God is available to convince your mind, to convict your will, and to comfort your heart. If you will read it, cherish it, and let it dwell within you richly, you'll see the darkness retreat as the light of God's truth shines brightly in your life."

I believe that the hope this timely book supplies can leave us all shining brighter for a frightened world to see.

Find Your Strongest Life: What the Happiest and Most Successful Women Do Differently by Marcus Buckingham

Women are hungry to live lives that are satisfying, meaningful and purpose driven. We have more choices than any other time in history, yet statistics show a decline in happiness. Many women have bought into the myth that they could and should “have it all” and that belief led them down a path of disillusionment.

Using carefully structured questions called The Strong Life Test, (available online) Marcus Buckingham suggests primary and secondary roles that you can fill. By working in these areas you will find your strongest life.

As one who trusts God’s Word which says “Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 Amplified, I was disappointed that so much of Buckingham’s advice leads us to rely on our emotions. I would like to have seen mention made of allowing the Lord into all of our decision making processes. That is where we can truly find our strongest lives.

Fresh Start - God's Invitation to a Great Life - by Doug Fields

Have you been feeling stuck in a life that isn’t providing the abundance of hope and joy that Jesus promises us?

Do your struggles with anger, pride, guilt, disappointment and more seem to repeat day after day after day?

The good news is that it is never too late for a new beginning. Doug Fields shows us how we can cooperate with God, letting His power transform us, giving us the Fresh Start we need.

Doug’s words reached into places that we might not ordinarily choose to go. Using examples from his own life, he holds up a mirror that reflects the state of our hearts. If you’re like me, what you see may reveal places where you need renovations.

Doug gives us exercises to work through while his insights and humor guide us each step of the way toward the freedom of a new life in Christ. I found his words apply equally well to the life of a well seasoned Christian or a new believer.

In a chapter about conflict, Doug writes “As we seek Him, He transforms us into deeper, richer, and more meaningful people.” That’s exactly the kind of Fresh Start I need and desire.
